Dogwood Creek Camp
110.2 kmThis is an easy Sunday drive through the Barakula State Forest to an old settlement site next to the creek. There is not much left at the site except a water tank, some old cement slabs and house stumps sticking out of the ground. Apparently it can have good fishing in the Creek after rain but I didn't try. Be careful on this drive as there are plenty of wild Brumbies which can jump out of no where, we seen mobs of about 30 at one point just off the road in the bush.
Hema - Hay River Track to Poeppel Corner
20.1 kmHEMA SIMPSON DESERT - K1 LINE
This track runs along the Hay River Track to reach Poeppel Corner, which is the convergence of the Queensland, South Australia and Northern Territory borders.
The point is named after Augustus Poeppel, who conducted a survey in the 1880s to exactly mark out the borders of the three central states with a coolibah post he had dragged there by camel. The post has since moved to more accurately reflect the intersection and was even replaced in 1989, while an official marker has been laid to definitively mark today's state borders nearby.
