Huon area

306.3 km

Just some suggestions to see the area. This route is point to point not a track. It is probably over 400km so it will be an over night some where.
Plenty of accommodation in the towns, some tourist brochures from the hire car company should give you phone numbers etc.

The logic behind the route is to get you from the airport and down and around the D'entrecasteaux Channel to come back up the eastern side of the Huon Estuary following the shore line as far as possible.
Then check out Huonville, then your block, then cross the river at Judbury and come back down the other side of the river.

At Geeveston, deviate off into the forest and check out the Huon Air Walk (Yes it is a touristy gimmick (and spoilt a perfectly good riverside campsite)) but will give you a taste of the forest and river environment.
Then check out the Hartz Mountains (only if it is fine weather)

Then follow the road south and check out Hastings Caves (with a thermal pool so take swimmers). Again a tourist cave, but well presented.
If you have time/inclination to go as far south as is possible, go down to Cockle Creek. This time of the year it will be full of campers, but there is an easy walk out to the headland and the views are quite wild.
You should have a parks pass for Hartz Mountain and Cockle Creek, but they are not at all vigilant in checking them.
It may pay to get a 2 year pass if you are going to live down here.
Lots of history in the area, it was once a whaling station and timber harvesting area. The part of the road after Lune River can be a bit stony, but even a small hire car like a honda or similar should be ok with a bit of care.

You can cut the return trip a lot shorter by following the signs to Hobart and using the main roads.
